John William
Riggin, Jr.
August 3, 1928 – November 28, 2017
John (Jack) William Riggin, Jr., 89, of Severna Park, Maryland passed away peacefully on November 28, 2017. Jack was born on August 3, 1928 in Baltimore, MD.
As he recovered from a broken leg when he was nine years old, Jack filled his time by drawing. He continued to draw and paint through to his graduation from Towson High School. He won a scholarship to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, where he earned a B.F.A. degree. Drafted for military service during the Korean War, he put his artistic skills to use for the U.S. Army stateside, where he designed posters and illustrations. The G.I. bill allowed him to continue his studies at the Pratt Institute School of Design in Brooklyn, New York. From there he returned to Baltimore to pursue a career as a commercial artist. At Royal Dadmun and Associates, he designed the logo and packaging for Hershey's Mr. Goodbar. At Eisner and Associates, he illustrated several campaigns for the Maryland Lottery and other accounts. He completed his career at Martin Marietta in Middle River, where he drew everything from space shuttles to aircraft to missile launching systems. During his retirement, Jack and his wife Eileen enjoyed traveling, and he was able to indulge his lifelong interest in black & white photography, twice winning prizes from the Baltimore Sun photography contest. Jack and Eileen lived for more than forty years in the home he designed in Bel Air Acres, raising their family and enjoying worship, fellowship and service at Bel Air United Methodist Church.
Jack is preceded in death by his beloved wife Eileen. He is survived by his son Rob, son John and daughter-in-law Kate, and grandchildren Jack, Margaret, Mary Jo, Fred and Daniel.
