John McGovern
John "Jack" Joseph McGovern Sr., 85, of Annapolis, died of heart failure June 17 at home after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 5, 1921, in Manchester, N.H., Mr. McGovern grew up in New York City and New Hampshire. He was proud of his Jesuit training, first at Fordham Prep School and then at Fordham University. After graduating at age 19, he earned his law degree at Georgetown University Law Center.
He married Capt. Sarah Jane Slater, then an Army nurse, and both served with distinction in World War II, he as a military attorney on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific theater of operations. He was discharged as a lieutenant colonel.
After practicing law in the private sector, he joined the Senate Rackets Committee as minority counsel to Arkansas Sen. John McClellan, chairman of the committee when Robert Kennedy was committee general counsel. Other members of this historically important committee were Senators John F. Kennedy and Barry Goldwater. The committee focused on labor union racketeering issues.
Subsequently Mr. McGovern joined the 1964 presidential campaign of Sen. Goldwater. For the balance of his career, he practiced law in the private sector, mostly in Washington, D.C.
He and his wife, now deceased, raised six children in the Washington area, and were members of St. Patrick's Church in Rockville. He was devoted to his family, enjoyed golf and had an ever present Churchill cigar, his family said.
Surviving are his children, Patricia Heitz of Arlington, Texas, James McGovern of Los Angeles, Calif., Kitty Flinn of Kansas City, Kan., Terry McGovern of Arnold, John McGovern Jr. of Severna Park and Margaret Tyrrell of Bel Air; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.
