John J. "Jack" McCabe, 83, formerly of the Chartwell community in Severna Park, died of natural causes Jan. 1 at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville where he resided since 1998.
Born March 1, 1921, in Bridgeport, Conn., Mr. McCabe was reared in Seaside Village, adjacent to Long Island Sound. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School and Bassick High School, where he lettered in three sports. Later he attended Syracuse University on a football scholarship. He was involved in student government and studied politics and history.
Mr. McCabe served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He worked as a sales executive for Addressograph Multigraph Corp., later named Farrington Corp. His career took him to Houston, Van Nuys, Calif., Rochester, N.Y., Cleveland, Ohio, and Baltimore, where he was branch manager.
An active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, he also belonged to Rotary International and participated on the Baltimore Washington International Airport Advisory Committee.
A member of Chartwell Golf and Country Cub, he coordinated a group of seniors, affectionately called "Jack's Pack," in weekly golf outings.
In 1950 he married Teresa Lesso McCabe, who died in April 1970. He married Elizabeth Wilson McCabe, who died in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin McCabe of Coconut Grove, Fla., and Christopher John McCabe, Maryland secretary of human resources, of Ellicott City; one daughter, Kathleen Donna McCabe of Reston, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial will follow in Baltimore National Cemetery, 5501 Frederick Ave. in Baltimore.
