John LeRoy Mannel, Jr.
John "Jack" LeRoy Mannel, Jr. of Annapolis, MD died at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, MD on December 16, 2007 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.
Jack was born in Baltimore, MD on July 30, 1927 and was raised in Catonsville, MD. He also lived in Arbutus, MD prior to living in Annapolis, where he resided for 30 years.
Mr. Mannel attended Catonsville High School and Johns Hopkins University's McCoy College. He became an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company where he worked for 30 years.
Mr. Mannel served in the U. S. Coast Guard during the last days of WW II, where he was awarded the Asian-Pacific Campaign medal. He later served in the Korean War, as well.
He was a member of National Life Underwriters; Exchange Club of Catonsville, Kent Island Yacht Club, and the Fleet Reserve Club of Annapolis.
He had his private pilot's license and instrument rating. He loved sailing, tennis, swimming, and playing bridge. He enjoyed the opera and ballroom dancing.
Surviving are his wife, Harriett W. Larsen (nee: Weber) whom he married on 10/10/1981; a daughter, Brenda C. Morrison of Sharpsburg, MD; a son, Christopher T. Mannel of Catonsville, MD; four stepdaughters, Karen L. Burns of Apex, NC, Sharon E. Benfer of Parkville, MD, Kristen M. Larsen of Mercersburg, Pa and Eileen L. Smith of Ellicott City, MD; two stepsons, William A. Lombardi III of Perry Hall, MD and Kenneth J. Larsen of Woodstock, MD; two brothers, Frederick Gerry Mannel of Bel Air, MD and Thomas Gary Mannel of Kernersville, NC; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Inc. 135 Parkinson Avenue Staten Island, NY 10305.
