John Kenneth Mann, a resident of the Elmhurst Ridge community in Severn for the past 18 years, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 10, 2008 after enduring years of chronic heart disease. Rev. Mann was born in Thomas, West Virginia where he attended public schools. He graduated with Psychology and Education degrees from Davis and Elkins College, a Bachelors and Masters of Divinity from Union Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and advanced Psychology studies at West Virginia University and Union Seminary.
He served in both theaters of war, the Atlantic and Pacific, in World War II and was made a Chaplain in the Pacific theater. He also was a member of the Navy Reserve.
Chaplain Mann was an ordained Presbyterian Minister serving churches in presbyteries of Winchester, Norfolk, Potomac, and Greenbrier. Rev. Mann was an active Elder and Elder Emeritus in the Glen Burnie Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he taught Bible classes, served in the choir, and taught Sunday School.
Rev. Mann taught in the West Virginia and Anne Arundel County School System, teaching at McArthur Junior High School and North Glen, Pershing Hill, and Waugh Chapel Elementary Schools. For 14 years he taught with the Adult Education Evening School teaching Psychology, English, and Math. He also served in the Home/Hospital Program for Anne Arundel County children.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Marie Mann, his son John Wesley Mann, daughter-n-law Catherine Williamson Mann, and grandson William Milton Mann. Also surviving are siblings Paul Mann of Thomas, West Virginia and Jean Cornwell of Annapolis, Maryland, and the late Janice Peters, Andrew Mann, Brown Mann, and Peggy Simpson.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, February 12th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home in Severna Park. The Memorial Service will be held at Glen Burnie Evangelical Presbyterian Church at 9:00 am on Wednesday, February 13th .
