John (Jack) Melbourne Jones Jr of Severna Park, Maryland passed away peacefully with his wife (Carol Ann Jones) of 67 years by his side on March 1, 2022 at the age of 90. Born on January 24, 1932 in Lake Charles, La to the late John and Mary Jones, Jack moved to Severna Park early in life and attended High School at Severn School in Severna Park. He then attended, and graduated from, the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1955) in Annapolis, MD, being commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Navy.
While at Severn School, Jack excelled in athletics and was on the football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. Among his accomplishments were two years as Maryland State Wrestling Champion at his weight, and an All State Honorable Mention in Lacrosse. Upon graduation, Jack was awarded the "Athletic Award of the Class of 1923". Jack was involved in many other school activities taking leadership roles as Vice President of the Varsity Club, and President of the Student Council.
While attending the Naval Academy, Jack excelled in Lacrosse becoming an Honorable Mention All American (1953) and First Team All American (1954) at the position of Goaltender. Jack also Captained Navy's 1954 undefeated National Championship team and was awarded the "Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award" as the Nation's top collegiate Goaltender. Upon graduation, Jack married the love of his life Carol Ann (Roberts) Jones in June of 1955. During his service in the Navy, Jack served on several ships including the USS Salisbury Sound and the Ice Breaker USS Atka, attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Ca, and served a tour of duty at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Jack achieved the rank of LtCmdr. before electing to leave the service in 1965. After leaving the Navy, Jack accepted a teaching position at Severn School where he also coached lacrosse, before becoming the Director of Data Processing at the U.S. Naval Academy where he would work until retirement. While working at the Naval Academy, Jack was an assistant coach on Navy's lacrosse team from 1966 until 1982. In retirement, Jack was involved in coaching youth lacrosse, and spent several years as President of the Severn School Alumni Association.
Jack was a tremendous husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and friend. Jack led with dignity and respect, and believed to his core that everyone regardless of age, relation or stature had the right to be valued for their own sake. His passions and interests included family, coaching, teaching, lacrosse, Severn School, USNA, golf, vacations at the beach and beer and BBQ on the deck.
Jack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carol Ann Jones, Severna Park, MD, four children Mary Louise York (Tom York), Milton, DE, David Ian Jones, Annapolis, MD, John Richard Jones, Severna Park, MD and Laura Ann Jones, Milton, DE, Nine grandchildren Carrie Howard (Max Howard), Rising Sun, IN, Christine Layton (Blake Layton), Colorado Springs, CO, David Taylor Jones (Krista Jones), Lexington, VA, Genevieve Leigh Jones, Royal Oak, MI, Samuel Eversfield Jones, Norfolk, VA, Jack Jones, Annapolis, MD, Grace Jones, Severna Park, MD, Sophie Lipa, Minneapolis, MN , Matthew Jones, Milton, DE, and two great grandchildren, Jack Jones, Lexington, VA., Bennett Jones, Lexington, VA.
The family will be celebrating Jack's life on Sunday April 10, 2022 at the home of his son Johnny Jones. Friends of Jack and his family are welcome to stop by anytime they would like between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The address is 206 Riggs Avenue, Severna Park, MD 21146.
