IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John C.
Lehmann
February 2, 1946 – October 17, 2016
John C. Lehmann, 70, of Severna Park passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on October 17th due to complications from pancreatic cancer. John was born in Baltimore City on February 2nd 1946 to Mary and Charles Lehmann. He was the oldest of 5 siblings, Lawrence (Larry), Charles (Chuck), Rosemary (Rose) and William (Bill). John graduated from Poly High School in 1964 and went on to the University of Maryland where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 3 years in 1967. He received his Masters at Johns Hopkins University and then began his 40 year career with Westinghouse Electric/Northrop Grumman. One of John's greatest achievements in his professional career was the development of the AWACS for aircrafts later being deemed the "Father" of the project. After his retirement in 2007, John immersed himself in several community programs: Opportunity Builders, YWCA, Wellness House of Annapolis, Hospice of the Chesapeake, Anne Arundel Medical Center, and the Ministry to the Homebound. John had a great love for children/adults with disabilities and never hesitated to involve himself in events and board memberships to make this community feel his love. John enjoyed coordinating the "Sea Perch" (a competitive science project for middle schoolers) and substituting and tutoring several students at St. John's in Severna Park.
John loved his family and friends more then you can imagine – no matter what the occasion; John would never miss spending time with them. It wasn't where he went, but it was who he was with that he enjoyed so much. Ravens football games, University of Maryland basketball/lacrosse games, University of Delaware lacrosse games, boating, visiting New York and Lake Hopatcong, enjoying time with his grand dogs, participating in the parade of lights, spending time at his house in Bethany Beach, traveling to countless places all over the world for pleasure and work created more memories that brought so much happiness to John's life.
John was always the first to volunteer his time, knowledge, passion and cheerfulness. Whether it was as the former President of Berrywood Community Association and Swim and Tennis Club or Bethany Proper Townhouses, to help build a bench for the community tennis club, to help a friend move, to provide a car ride or company for any acquaintance in need, or to offer a warm welcome to everyone he encountered. He never expected anything in return – he truly was one of a kind and loved by everyone he touched. John had a twinkle in his eye and could have easily been mistaken for Santa Claus. More than anything John's greatest love was becoming "Poppy" to his granddaughters in 2012. They were the light of his life and he was in the light in theirs.
After John's diagnosis it was an up and down roller coaster, but what never wavered was John's spirit for life and making others around him feel his love. We are so incredibly grateful for the unbelievable care he received at AAMC and the compassion and support by every staff member there. Thank you!
John is survived by his loving wife; Tricia (44 years), his sons; Jonathan (Dinah) and Matthew (Allison), his granddaughters; Tenley and Maci, his mother; Mary, his 2 brothers; Larry (Irene) and Bill (Diane), sister; Rose Thommen (Bernie), his aunt; Mitzy Leithauser, and several nieces and nephews.
