John Timothy Latham, 87, of Severna Park, former president of J. M. McCrone Jr. Inc. in Annapolis, died of Alzheimer's disease March 12 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park after an eight-year illness.
Mr. Latham was born in Baltimore on Jan. 19, 1920. He lived in Clearwater, Fla., New Bern, N.C., Philadelphia, Pa., and Linthicum Heights. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1938 and worked for Addison Clark Brothers Steel in Baltimore.
He married Sally Booth on March 1, 1941.
During World War II he served in the Army Antiaircraft, stationed primarily at Fort Bliss, Texas.
In 1946 he returned to Maryland, taking a surveying job with J.R. McCrone Jr. Inc. in Annapolis where his brother was employed. He continued his education, taking night courses at various local colleges. He remained with McCrone until retirement, becoming a registered land surveyor and working with his brother to build the firm, later serving as president of the company.
He contributed to the Annapolis and Severna Park communities with service on various committees and boards.
The Lathams moved to Linstead in Severna Park in 1949. He was an active member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, where he was ordained as an elder and served in many capacities. He also was an active member of the Severn River Lions Club, serving as president among other roles.
Considered a capable handyman, after retirement he became interested in wood working and built beautiful furniture, his family said.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Latham is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Latham of Arnold; and one brother, Robert F. Latham of Destin, Fla. He was the brother of the late Fayette M. Latham Jr. and Margaret L. Manning.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
