Dr. John Franklin Kressler, 65, of Arnold, died of leukemia Sept. 21 at home after a 10-year and one-day illness.
Born March 19, 1942, in Baltimore, Dr. Kressler graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1960 and earned a bachelor's degree in biology and education from Western Maryland College in 1964 and a master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland College Park in 1966. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland at the Baltimore School of Medicine in 1972.
Later he earned an associate's degree in fine arts and music from Anne Arundel Community College in 1994 and a bachelor of arts degree in music and composition from the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus in 1998. Currently he was working towards a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland College Park. He was to graduate in May 2008.
Dr. Kressler served in the Army as a major with the Medical Corps, then as a general surgeon at Baltimore Washington Medical Center for 20 years. Subsequently, he taught geography at Anne Arundel Community College for 16 years.
His interests include playing tennis and the piano.
Surviving are one daughter, Dr. Robin Kressler-Taub of Millersville; one son, Dr. John F. Kressler II of Arnold; one brother, Michael Kressler of Glen Burnie; and two grandsons.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd. in Annapolis. Burial is private.
