John Henry Heinrich, Sr., 88, a resident of Severna Park for over 30 years, died of respiratory failure at his home on May 23, 2008 following a brief illness.
Mr. Heinrich was born on Nov. 29, 1919 in Baltimore, MD, where he was also raised. He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School and Southern High. Later, he attended the MD Institute where he received a certificate in aeronautical drafting. This led to a position with Glenn L. Martin Aircraft, where he built B-26 Bombers.
He enlisted in the Army in 1943. Mr. Heinrich served in WW II and was a combat veteran in the 17th Airborne Division, where he was a paratrooper and field artillery gunner. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was among the first to cross the Rhine River in Operation Varsity.
After serving in WW II, Mr. Heinrich began a career as a Baltimore City firefighter, where he was stationed at 8 Truck and 30 Engine. Later he earned a Radio Operator's license. This resulted in a promotion to Radio Technician where he retired as a Lieutenant in 1980, serving over 32 years.
Mr. Heinrich was a member of the International Firefighter's Association, Local 964 and The Baltimore City Fire Officers & Firefighters Association. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. In addition, he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Locust Point, Baltimore, St. William of York in West Baltimore, and St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park, MD.
Mr. Heinrich was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Florence (Hockstra) Heinrich, whom he married in 1945. He is survived by two sons, John H. Heinrich, Jr. of California and George C. Heinrich of Cary, NC; two daughters, Maria L. Nicholls and Louise M. Evans, both of Severna Park, MD; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Friends may visit at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 3-5pm. A funeral service will be held following the visitation. A private interment will be held at MD Veterans Cemetery, Garrison Forrest in Baltimore County.
