John Henry Hammond, a long time resident of Annapolis, died at his home on April 21st. He was 89.
John was born on October 10, 1921, in Baltimore, the son of Richardson Thomas Hammond and Marie Naas Willis. He graduated from Baltimore City College in 1940. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became highly decorated during the course of flying 35 combat missions in the B-17 at the height of World War II. After military service, he accomplished a successful 36-year career with Prudential Insurance Company. After retirement, he quenched a life-long thirst for travel while working at Friendship Travel Agency. He virtually saw the world.
In 1944, he married Jane Wolf Strevig who became the mother of their two sons. Jane died suddenly in 1957. He met Mary Ruth Guerth of Severna Park at church and took her hand in marriage in 1959. He is also preceded in death by his second wife, Ruth. He is survived by his two sons John Henry Hammond Jr. and wife, Druscilla of Carmel, California and Richard Strevig Hammond and wife, Dorothy, of Patuxent River, Maryland, seven grandchildren, John III, Julie, Larry, Sarah, Kathryn, Elizabeth and Annelise, and eight great grandchildren.
All whose lives were touched by him remember his warmth, absolute decency, optimistic and pragmatic spirit, deep spiritual faith, and devotion to his family and the larger community.
Visitation will be held on Monday April 25 from 2-5 pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146. A funeral service will be held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church 611 B&A Blvd in Severna Park on Tuesday April 26th at 11 am. Interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
