Tom Hamilton was the only son of the four children of John Thomas and Marie Crosby Hamilton, Sr. of Baltimore, Maryland and was born on May 20, 1930. He was a graduate of Kenwood Senior High School where he met his first wife, Janet Horst. Tom graduated from the University of Maryland in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts and was named an All American in Soccer. Upon graduation from the University of Maryland, Tom was commissioned as a 2 ^nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Force serving at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho and Great Falls AFB, Montana.

Upon discharge from the service, he was hired by the U.S. Department of Defense, National Security Agency. Tom's career with NSA spanned 33 years serving in increasing positions of responsibility as chiefs of various staff and offices and was known for his expertise in the Offices of Security and Personnel. Tom was elevated to the prestigious ranks of Senior Cryptologic Executive Service (SCES) in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the mission of the agency. He received the Meritorious Service Award and a cash emolument from the Director of the Agency upon his retirement. Tom consistently led by words and deeds, and was an authority on a vast number of subjects without being authoritarian. He was treasured for the manner in which he freely gave of his time, his larger than life intellect and gifted insights.

Tom and Jan were married Dec. 27, 1952 at St. Clement's in Rosedale. They had 3 children, Cheri Johnson (Mark) of Peoria, AZ, Scott Hamilton (Doris) of Crownsville, MD, and Keith Hamilton (Mary) of Salisbury, MD. Both widowed in 2003 and reintroduced by a mutual friend, Tom married Alice Kagan Birx on Feb. 6, 2005 at St. John Church in Linthicum and became step father to Alice's children, Glenn Birx (Karen) of Phoenix, MD and Kasey Burke (Warren) of Milton, DE. They have 10 grandchildren, Eric Johnston (Marie) of Oklahoma City, OK, Kristen Johnston (Scott Simon) of Chicago, IL, Neal Hamilton (Lindsey) of Fayetteville, AR, Emily DeJesus (Jobe) of Navarre, FL, Ben Hamilton of Salisbury, MD, Daniel Burke (Brynn) of Clayton, DE, Jeremy Burke (Theresa) of Laurel, MD, Jonathan Burke (Genna) of Lawrenceville, NJ, Laura Birx (Adam Matschek) of Seattle, WA, and Emily Birx (Alex Brewer) of Baltimore, MD, and 9 great grandchildren, Jack & Alex Johnston, Addison & Jonah DeJesus, Zora, Kellan & Lilah Burke, Lena Brewer and Bennett Burke.

Tom was an avid golfer. If he wasn't playing, he was marshalling or watching a tournament on TV. He also enjoyed crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, coaching his sons' soccer teams, pool, bridge and dancing.

Visitation will be on Friday July 23, 2021 from 5-8pm at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A., 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD, 21146. Interment is private at Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Rosedale. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD, 21122 or to a charity of your choice.
