John Gatton

John Thomas Gatton, 70, of Severna Park, died of complications from a stroke Nov. 19 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

The son of the late Thomas and Alberta Gatton, Mr. Gatton was born May 17, 1935, in Hollywood in St. Mary's County.

He served in the Marine Corps for four years and worked for the Anne Arundel County government for several years prior to his career with the Maryland Department of Environmental Services.

He was a former baseball manager and coach with the Green Hornets Athletic Association as well as a member of the Severna Park Elks for 31 years. In 1985, he was named Elk of the Year.

An avid NASCAR and Orioles baseball fan, he also enjoyed hunting and bowling.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen Marie Smith Gatton; three sons, John Parks of Severna Park, Thomas Gatton of Glen Burnie and Charles Gatton of Arnold; one brother, John William Gatton of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Elizabeth Gatton Listman of Severna Park; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Park, Glen Burnie.
