John Godfrey Gary, Jr., passed away on July 12, 2025 at the age of 81. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1943, John moved to Pasadena and then Millersville, and spent his life in public service to the citizens of Anne Arundel County and the State of Maryland. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruthanne Neighoff Gary. John is survived by his three children, Donna, Cynthia, and Gregory, four grandchildren, Hannah, Adam, Amelia, and John, brother-in-law, Theodore Neighoff, Jr., and several nieces and nephews.

John served as Anne Arundel County Executive from 1994 to 1998, Maryland House of Delegates (1983-1994) and the Anne Arundel County Board of Licensing Commissioners (1979-1980). John was a former appointee to the MD Shock Trauma Board of Visitors and Maryland Port Commission. John was a business owner for more than 40 years and worked at MDOT during the Hogan Administration. A graduate of Glen Burnie High School, John was inducted to their Wall of Honor in 2022. He earned many awards during his career including Man of the Year from the Young Republicans of Anne Arundel County, Legislator of the Year by the American Family Association and received a Presidential Citation - Maryland Recreation and Parks Association.

The family is holding a private burial. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
