IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Alan
Friedel
July 26, 1963 – July 30, 2023
John Alan Friedel (b. July 26,1963) passed in peace on July 30,2023 at the age of 60 in the quiet comfort of his Guilford home. The cause was heart failure.
John was a witty firebrand whose quirky take on life was disarming. Full of optimism, energy and a wicked sense of humor, John had an unbridled zest for life.
His early years were spent in Severna Park, Maryland where he enjoyed sailing on the Severn River, lifeguarding at the Naval Academy pool, and riding around in his canary yellow Spitfire convertible. Without a doubt, John loved summertime and reveled in its delights.
No slouch academically, John attended Severn School and graduated from Severna Park High School in 1981. He then obtained a Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Loyola University, Baltimore and followed that up with a Master's Degree in Business Management from Johns Hopkins .
John's early career started with his first Job at Progressive Insurance followed by Zurich Insurance. He left insurance to become a Product Manager with International Paper. Having spent twenty some years in the corporate world John had a calling to do something more and give back to his community. John left his successful business endeavors and began work with non- profit organizations where he found his life's purpose serving those in need . He devoted 7 years to the Safe and Sound Campaign helping children at risk in Baltimore City . In 2015 he joined Baltimore Station as their Executive Director where he worked tirelessly helping homeless veterans turn their lives around.
John was someone who made a difference every day and in every way.
Ever the bon vivant John was an avid foodie and gourmet chef who loved to entertain friends. Summertime parties at his home, under the stars were a true delight. His other passions included travel, gardening and spending time with his fur children.
John is predeceased by his mother Evelyn Stockett Friedel of Annapolis and his father John Edward Friedel. John is survived by his partner and love of his life Rick Shane, lifelong friend Laura Touhey, dearest friend Terrell Boston Smith and his goddaughter, Caroline Boston Smith.
A celebration of life will be announced in the future.
