John Leslie Day, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home in Severna Park on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 after a brief illness.
John was born on January 11, 1943, to the late John Leslie Day and Eunice Cogar in Baltimore, where he was raised. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1960 and held an Associate's Degree in Computer Science from Anne Arundel Community College and a Bachelor's Degree from University College, University of Maryland.
John served with distinction 20 years as an Intelligence Operations Technician in the United States Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. Following his military service, John was employed for over 30 years as a software engineer for companies in support of Department of Defense contracts.
John was a member of St. Martin's in-the-Field Episcopal Church and the American Volkssport Association. He enjoyed bicycling, crossword puzzles, stamp collecting, Volksmarches, traveling and online poker. He was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Cynthia Shimp-Day; son, Daniel Shimp of Halethorpe, MD; sister, Eunice DeLawter; nieces, Chris Holcomb and Lianne DeLawter; nephew, David DeLawter; and great nieces and nephews all of Frederick, MD and John DeLawter of California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00am in the St. Martins in-the-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Blvd. Severna Park, MD 21146.
