IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan F.
Robinson
October 19, 1934 – April 28, 2021
Joan Frances Robinson (nee McCarron) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and formerly of Severna Park, Maryland, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. Born in Washington D.C. on October 19, 1934, to Joseph and Mary McCarron she was one of five children. Joan lost her father at the age of four and was raised along with her four siblings by her mother. She grew up in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, attending St. Anthony Catholic school and Notre Dame Academy, and attended the University of Maryland, College Park. She worked for WMAL TV in DC in its early years and later in the Pathology Department at the Georgetown University Hospital where she met her husband, Dr. Sherman S. Robinson, M.D. The two were married in 1956 and in 1962, settled in Severna Park when her husband opened one of the first pediatric practices in the area. They had three children, Deborah, Michael and Christina, and became an integral part of the developing Severna Park area. Joan devoted her life to her family and was involved in many community activities and organizations.
Joan's Catholic faith guided her throughout her life. She saw the positive in everything and had a deep spiritual faith. She was a professed member of the Secular Franciscan order, and in 1971 with four others, was a founding member of the Secular Franciscan fraternity at the St. Conrad Capuchin Friary in Annapolis. She was a religious educator and taught for several decades at St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park and later at Our Lady of the Fields in Millersville. Cardinal William Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore, recognized her with a special award for her many years of service.
Known for her warm hospitality, she was a gracious hostess and opened up her waterfront Severn River home for religious retreats and other philanthropic events including a special event for the Brazilian Ambassador and his diplomatic corps.
Joan served for many years on the Board of the YMCA of Central Maryland. She was also active with the Anne Arundel Medical Center's Auxiliary and the Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) in Annapolis. A strong supporter of the "Right to Life" movement she volunteered at Birthright in Annapolis and Glen Burnie. She annually participated in the National March for Life in Washington, D.C.
She was an avid Washington Redskin fan and with her husband enjoyed season tickets for decades culminating in a trip to the 1992 Super Bowl. She loved the game of golf. She was a member of Chartwell Country Club where she played in the Ladies 9-hole group as well as the "Interclub" 9-hole group competing against other clubs throughout the Baltimore region.
Joan moved through life with an exceptional willingness to give of herself to her church and the community. She held deep relationships with her family and worked tirelessly to meet their needs and assure their success. She especially enjoyed the summers at her Ocean City Condo where she entertained family and friends. She shared her joy and hospitality and made all feel welcomed!
A few years following the 2011 death of her husband, Joan relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she lived close to her daughter Debbie.
Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Dr. Sherman Robinson, her sisters Elaine McCarron SCN, Mary Dolores Waters and brother James McCarron. She is survived by her children Deborah L. Minneman (Tom) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael W. Robinson Sr. (Shannon) of Greencastle, Pennsylvania and Christina E. Davis of Pasadena.
