Jerry Daniel Merkel, 70, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on March 18, 2017, in Selbyville, De, formerly of Crownsville, Md.  He was born in Washington, DC on December 6, 1946 to Leo and Elly Merkel.

Jerry graduated from Arundel High School in 1964 and joined the Army Reserve. After receiving an accounting degree from Baltimore Institute he was employed by the State of Maryland as an auditor and retired in 2003 as Chief of Collections for State of Maryland with 34 years of service.

Jerry married Joanne Lundstrom in February 1966.  They were happily married for 51 years.  Jerry is survived by his wife, their son Duane Merkel of Severna Park, daughter Michelle Freitag of Deerfield Beach, FL and 3 grandchildren, Chase Merkel, Nichola Merkel and Max Freitag. He is also survived by 1 brother, 3 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.  Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and brother Fred Merkel.

Jerry was an avid lover of the water and enjoyed, boating, waterskiing, and fishing as well as many other outdoor activities.

Friends may visit on Sunday March 26, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Barranco & Sons,P.A Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie hwy. Severna Park,  MD 21146. Services will be held on Monday March 27, 2017 at 10:00am in the funeral home chapel.
