Jean William Showe, age 96, born in Hagerstown, Maryland on July 2, 1916, passed away peacefully on March 7 in Severna Park, Maryland. A longtime resident of Pines-on-the-Severn in Arnold, Maryland, he was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Esther Showe.

He was the beloved father of Linda (Mike) Baker of Bowie, Maryland and beloved grandfather of Craig Baker of Galion, Ohio and Courtney (Stephen) Kenney, of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Jean joined the Navy in 1938 and fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war in WW II. He was a survivor of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He was wounded at the battle of Guadalcanal when his ship was sunk. During his career, he served aboard the USS Raleigh (CL-7), Harding (DD-625), De Haven (DD-469), and Metcalf (DD-595). He was an original plank owner of the USS Harding after putting her in commission in New England.

Jean separated from the Navy after the war and married his nurse, Esther. The couple moved to Annapolis where he worked at the US Naval Engineering Experiment Station from 1945 until his retirement. He moved to Sunrise Senior Living, Severna Park in 2008. Jean will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, March 11, 2013 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, 21146. There will be a Chapel Service at 10:45 am at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, with interment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy, Annapolis, MD 21401.
