Jean-Marie Gerald Parent, affectionately known as Papi, was born on October 1, 1949, to Marie Therese and Gerard-Luc in Pétion-Ville, Haiti. As the eldest of five brothers, he naturally embraced the role of protector and caregiver from a young age. His deep devotion to family was evident throughout his life, most notably when he lovingly provided hospice care for his mother, ensuring she transitioned peacefully, surrounded by love.

In the early 1970s, Gerald arrived in the United States with his brother, Georges, first settling in Boston before making his way to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. There, he built a life grounded in service, community, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones.

For over 30 years, Gerald worked for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation before retiring. Never one to slow down, he and his beloved late spouse, Victoria Parent, established Marivic House in Pasadena, Maryland—a senior care home where aging people were looked after with love and dignity. Gerald had an extraordinary gift for caregiving, making Marivic House a true sanctuary. His warmth and kindness were so profound that many of the residents chose to stay with him during the holidays rather than return to their own families. Marivic House was more than just a facility; it was an extension of his heart.

Gerald's generosity extended beyond Marivic House. He was a pillar of the Haitian community in the D.C. area, preparing federal taxes for many years while maintaining a full-time job. He was a trusted figure in the community—always willing to lend a hand, offer guidance, and support those in need.

A lifelong traveler, Gerald made frequent trips back to Haiti to visit family and friends and found a second home in the Philippines. Family was his foundation, and he cherished every moment spent with loved ones. His passion for reading was equally strong—he was rarely seen without a book in hand. Lee Child's Jack Reacher series was a favorite, and he often reread the entire collection just for the joy of it. A man of many passions, Gerald also embraced all genres of music, particularly Haitian and Latin rhythms, which filled his heart and home.

Gerald found serenity in the salty air and radiance of the ocean. Some of his most treasured memories were made alongside the shores with his daughters and grandchildren. One of their last vacations together at Dewey Beach, Delaware, was particularly special.

His sense of humor, playful teasing, and constant encouragement made him the heart of his family. He always checked in on his daughters, ensuring they were not just okay but thriving.

Gerald's journey in this realm came to a peaceful close while surrounded by many of his loved ones and caregiver, Gloria, on Sunday, February 16, 2025. His final wishes will be honored when his ashes are returned to Haiti to be placed near his parents once travel is safe. Some of his ashes will also be scattered at Dewey Beach, a place filled with cherished family memories.

Gerald is survived by his two devoted daughters, Doris and Florence, and his beloved grandchildren, Leilani and Christian. He also leaves behind his brothers, Jean-Claude (Anita Diane), Jean-Bernard (Linette), Georges (Liliane), and Andre-Harry (Valerie). He was predeceased by his parents, Marie Therese and Gerard-Luc Parent, and his brother, Jose.

Gerald's memory will be lovingly cherished by a host of nieces and nephews—Dave, Laurie, Gregory, Andre, Troy, Stephanie, Reginald, Maurice, Anisa, Isayah, and Veronica—as well as uncles, aunts, and extended family including Jeanine (Roland), Ghislaine (Gerard), Serge (Gisela), and Rodrigue (Eldevan). His presence will be deeply missed by his in-laws, great-nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors in both the United States and Haiti.

Gerald's faithful furry companion, his beloved dog Mickey, now 22 years old, will continue to be cared for by his brother Jean-Claude and his wife, Anita Diane.

We remember Gerald not just for the life he lived, but for the love he gave. His legacy of kindness, humor, and selflessness will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
