JAY SCOTT HARMELING, the son of the late Richard W. Harmeling and Ruth W. Harmeling was born in Seattle, Washington at Swedish Medical Center October 15, 1945. He entered into peaceful rest on Monday, April 18, 2016. His sister Karen Jewell preceded him in death.
His formal education was at Vashon Island Elementary and High Schools and he attended Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. He married Camla Sue Christensen in December 1965 and from that union they had two sons.
He started his career in electronics at The Boeing Company and later worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he relocated to Maryland and received a United States Patent in July 1992. His work at Westinghouse now known as Northrop Grumman allowed him to travel worldwide. He loved to talk about his traveling experiences and his life on Vashon Island.
He became disabled in 1998 and suffered from health issues for many years. On Valentine's Day February 14, 2000, he wed EL'Rita Cook in Annapolis, Maryland. He loved to build electronic gadgets and he shared a love of music and travel with EL'Rita.
Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife; EL'Rita Cook-Harmeling, two sons; John Harmeling and Bryan Harmeling of Bremerton, Washington, four grandchildren; Justin Wells, Elizabeth (Beth) McGill, Scott Harmeling and Tyler Harmeling, one niece; Cindy H. Bailey, three nephews; Charlie Clarke of Puyallup, Washington, Scott Harmeling of Fox Island, Washington and Jason Jewell of Tacoma, Washington, two aunts; Shirley Godwin of San Diego, California and Lucille Seidenverg of Bend, Oregon, a step-sister and husband; Patricia and Paul Minier, Vashon Island, Washington, a step-brother and sister-in-law; Michael and Kim Tobin, Minnetonka, Minnesota, two step-sons; James Ewing of Baltimore, Maryland and Anthony Ewing of Atlanta, Georgia, two brother-in-law's; Lonnie Ewing, Windsor Mills, Maryland and Douglas McDonald, of Parkville, Maryland, one sister-in-law; Pearl Ewing, Windsor Mills, Maryland, many cousins and other extended family members and host of friends and dear co-workers.
A memorial service and burial will take place at a later date in Washington.
