Jane A. Flaherty of Galena, MD, passed away peacefully on August 12th at Baltimore Washington Medical Center due to complications from cancer. She was 81-years old.
A native of Baltimore, Mrs. Flaherty was in her mid-40's when she returned to college. First earning her Associate of the Arts degree at Anne Arundel Community College, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1976 from the University of Baltimore before receiving a Master of Administrative Science degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1978.
Shortly after graduating from Hopkins she embarked on a new career in the banking field, working for Provident Bank of Maryland until her retirement in 1993.
Born at the old Franklin Square Hospital in 1930, the former Emma Jane Anderson was the daughter of Henry and Mary Anderson of West Baltimore. She graduated in February, 1949 from Forest Park High School. She briefly attended the University of North Carolina before returning home to attend Baltimore Junior College.
Starting in the early 50's, she began working as an administrative assistant at several Baltimore area concerns including the Sunpapers, W.R. Grace, South Baltimore General Hospital, and the Kemp Manufacturing Co.
In 1955 she married Timothy Flaherty, and the couple made their home in the Catonsville area for a number of years before moving to Anne Arundel county. There, Mrs. Flaherty worked for the Maryland General Assembly, the US Navy, the office of State Senator Gilbert Gude, and ECAC at the North Severn Naval Station before returning to college and embarking on her new banking career.
Mr. Flaherty passed away in 1983.
After living with her husband and young son near Annapolis from the early 60's to the early 70's, Mrs. Flaherty moved with her family to Severna Park, where she lived for 32 years until moving to Rehoboth Beach, DE, then to Galena on the Eastern Shore in 2004. She enjoyed travel, and took trips to the Netherland Antilles, Africa, Switzerland, Greece, France, Bermuda, and Hawaii, among other destinations in the continental U.S. She was also a former member of Crabtowne Skiers of Annapolis and served as the organization's treasurer in the early 90's. Mrs. Flaherty also enjoyed gardening at her home in Galena.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Lisa Flaherty of Solomons, MD, and by a devoted friend, Anton Hoevenaars of Chestertown, MD.
A Memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday August 17, 2011 at the Barranco & Sons, P.A Severna Park Funeral Home from 5-8:00pm. A Memorial service will be held that same night at 7:30pm.
