James Dallas Bart Evans, born in Baltimore in 1938, a resident of Severna Park since 1961 died on Saturday, January 28 th 2017.

He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute's 'A Course' in 1957. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1961. He was a founder and first President of Sigma Omega Tau Fraternity which in later years became the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at Virginia Tech and was a member of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech. He was elected to 'Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges'. He attended graduate school at the University of Maryland and George Washington University in engineering and management. He was a registered professional engineer in Maryland and West Virginia.

He was an engineer and manager at Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman for 40 years. The majority of his career was spent in Electronic Warfare and International Business.

Since his retirement, he was active in environmental issues at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Grasonville.   He wrote grants and sponsored legislation to promote nutrient reduction on the Chesapeake Bay. He assisted in studies of submerged aquatic vegetation and wood ducks.

He enjoyed kayaking, hiking and loved time in West Virginia and vacations in Maine with his wife.

Surviving are his wife Lois Porterfield Evans, his daughter Erin Green and her husband Bruce, his son Ian Evans and wife Juliana Anzalone, grandson James Green and granddaughters Katharine Green, Sonja Anzalone-Evans, Chloe Anzalone-Evans, and Miranda Anzalone-Evans.

Bart is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather but to so many others he is remembered fondly as a dear friend and mentor. So many have recalled his unique ability to be comfortable and at ease with those he met regardless of the path in life they had chosen as well as his gift to be careful, concerned and astute listener. He understood the nature of friendship in the deepest sense, where interactions led to mutual growth, discovery and delight. Others remember how he seemed to see quickly to the heart of an issue whether it be the workings of a simple machine, the complexities of setting a stage at the theatre, the incredibly important issues of the defense work he did so diligently or the very personal issues which touched the lives of those he encountered. He had a presence, dignity and amazing reliability so that people naturally gravitated to him for advice and help which he gave patiently. So many disparate areas came under his watchful eye because of the diversity of his interests. The Boy Scouts of Troop 855 at St. Martin's in-the-field, the fraternity at Virginia Tech, those he managed with compassion and skill at Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman, the theatre groups which used his skills, the expertise he brought to the environmental work on the Eastern Shore, those dear lifelong friends he sponsored from the United States Naval Academy are but a few examples where his soul touched others and continues to do so.

Those of us who were privileged to be with him in his final hours and saw the dignity and grace which he maintained to the end of his life will continue to find inspiration for our own lives and are still learning from this grand old man.

James Dallas Bart Evans' ashes will be placed in a niche at the columbarium on campus at Virginia Tech.
