James Leonard (Sugar) Cain, III, passed from this world at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, Maryland on Thursday, October 20, 2016. He was born on June 11, 1931 in Pompey Smash; known today as Vale Summit, a village just south of Frostburg, Maryland, to Helen (Rooney) Cain and J. Leonard Cain, Jr. Jim graduated from LaSalle High School, Cumberland , in 1949, and Frostburg State Teachers College (FSTC) in 1954. He married Rosemary Folk in 1956. They moved to Annapolis in 1958 where Jim worked with the Welfare Board for two years before beginning his professional association with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). He taught Social Studies, became a guidance counselor, earned his masters at FSTC, became a Pupil Personnel Worker, and ultimately Coordinator of Pupil Personnel. As Coordinator, he also oversaw the out of area transfers of students and organized a yearly Christmas drive to provide shoes for children in Anne Arundel County. He retired in 1986 and worked at the Maryland State Board of Education before settling in with the External Diploma Program in AACPS, where he worked part time until he "retired" again in 2003. Jim was a member of Saint Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church in Cape St. Claire, the Knights of Columbus Frostburg Council 1442, a member of the Broadneck Elks, Lodge 2608, and the International Association of Pupil Personnel Workers. Throughout Jim's life, he played golf and was a long time member of Bay Hills Golf Club in Arnold, Maryland. The clubhouse became one of his favorite places because of the special people who worked there.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosemary Cain, his daughters Lee Ann Cain, Cathy Cain, and Patti Cain McTigue and her husband, Matt, as well as his beloved granddaughters Cecelia and Evelyn McTigue.
