Jacqueline "Jackie" Ann Chang, 86, beloved schoolteacher and devoted wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully after a valiant two-year battle with pancreatic cancer on October 28, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born on May 13, 1932, to William Henry Pfarr and Lena Contarini Pfarr in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jackie graduated from Eastern High School in 1950 and was able to attend Maryland State Teacher's College (now Towson University) on a full scholarship by agreeing to teach in the Baltimore public school system upon graduation.  She gladly took the opportunity while working part time in a dress store at night. She was well known for her beautiful singing voice.  She performed in college musical productions as well as on the radio and with the local USO for the troops. She was encouraged to pursue her singing career but chose her true passion, educating children.  Upon receiving her B.A. in 1954, she taught the fifth and sixth grades and loved every moment with her students. She was that teacher you never forgot.

On November 14, 1959, she married the love of her life, Dr. Paul Jongwan Chang, originally of Seoul, South Korea, at Our Lady of Fatima Church.  They had two daughters, Lisa and Ellen, and shared 56 beautiful years together until Dr. Chang's passing in 2015.  She took such amazing care of him and proudly celebrated his Korean heritage as well as her own Italian ancestry.  She was a proud descendant of the Doges of Venice, a Catholic Cardinal and an opera singer.

In 1967, she went back to college to become certified in early elementary education and taught pre-form 4 and kindergarten at Wroxeter-on-the-Severn School. She was an active member of the North Arundel Hospital Women's Auxiliary (now University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center). She was President of The Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland (Med-Chi) Auxiliary and served on their board.

Dr. and Mrs. Chang traveled to over 50 countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  Their travels included the Vatican in the Holy Years 1975, where they were granted an audience with the Pope, and 2000; the Great Pyramids of Egypt; the Berlin Wall; the Great Wall of China; the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem; riding the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Orient Express; attending the World Cup and Olympics in Seoul, South Korea; sailing on the Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary; and the week in Mongolia living in a ger while visiting the Yonsei Friendship Hospital.

Their most memorable trips by far were the trips with their grandchildren. They wanted to instill a love of travel and other cultures in Natalie, Christian, Miles, and Hillary, so they took each grandchild on a special European adventure. It is a tradition that will live on.

She was so proud of her family. She was there for every milestone in her children and grandchildren's lives, from honors assemblies to graduations to first communions and confirmations to sporting events and jazz concerts to grandparents' day celebrations and every birthday and holiday.

She loved her friends, both old and new.  She would get together every month for a meal or a trip with the Towson group, her college classmates. She loved American history, Colonial Williamsburg and all things British. She filled her home with 18 th and 19 th century antiques. She volunteered as a docent with Historic Annapolis, giving walking tours to visitors and school groups.  She was a member of the Maryland State Questers, a non-profit organization dedicated to the study, preservation and restoration of historic objects. She attended concerts, live performances and ballets all over the world. She loved animals of all kinds, especially her grand-dogs and grand-cat, and loved bringing them toys and treats. She supported the arts, PBS, historical societies, St. Jude's, and the ASPCA.

She was a devout Catholic and member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park for more than 46 years where she volunteered and enjoyed her church family.  She made sure she brought food or clothing each week to mass in support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was kind to everyone and always had something nice to say. She loved her doctors and nurses at Johns Hopkins where she was a favorite patient because of her positive attitude and smile.  She was truly an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Jacqueline Chang is predeceased by her husband, Paul, and sister, Gloria Myers Moore. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Chang Malone and husband Steven of West Palm Beach, Florida; Ellen Chang Kumm and husband John of Millersville, Maryland; her grandchildren Natalie Malone Atkinson and husband Cameron; Christian Potter; Miles Malone; Hillary Jacqueline Malone; and great-grandson Declan Atkinson. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law Retired Colonel (Army) Mark J. Chang, M.D. and wife Soon Hi; Dr. Louis Chang and wife Helen; sister-in-law Jong In Kim; nephew Bernard Myers and wife Soozie; godsons James Linsao, Brian Walters and John Linsao; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 10 th at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, Maryland.  A reception will follow. The interment will be held at Lorraine Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, 5608 Dogwood Road, Baltimore, Maryland at 2:30 p.m.

The family would appreciate a written remembrance (a story or memory) for her grandchildren and great grandchildren of their beloved Nana. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Pancreas Multidisciplinary Cancer Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital; the ASPCA or the Force Network Fund (a charity established by Mrs. Chang's granddaughter and grandson-in-law that benefits military and first responders).
