Dr. J. Brady Smith, 91, a retired physician and a lifelong resident of Maryland, died April 29 at his home in Severna Park after a lengthy illness.

Born in Baltimore on March 13, 1916, Dr. Smith was the son of the late Dr. Francis Edward Smith and Lillian Brady Smith. He was the great-nephew of a former Maryland governor, Emerson Harrington, and had tried to keep his ties to the family on the Eastern Shore.

He graduated in 1936 from the University of Maryland where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He graduated in 1940 from the University of Maryland Medical School but before he could continue in a special branch of medicine, World War II intervened. He spent two years in the Pacific, the last as chief medical officer aboard the attack transport USS Eastland.

After the war Dr. Smith established a family medical practice in Anne Arundel County. He was known throughout the area for his hundreds of home deliveries, sparing those who could not afford the hospital maternity bills. He also was known for rarely sending a bill, convinced that his patients knew what they owed and would pay when convenient. He was, like his father before him, a true "country doctor," his family said.

In his younger years he was an avid sailor. A member of the Annapolis Yacht Club, he competed in local events on the Chesapeake Bay and Severn River and maintained a home on one of the waterways. Upon discovering golf, he became a charter and life member of the Chartwell Golf and County Club, building a home on the edge of the course and playing until his health prevented it.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Lee "Kitty" Pollard Smith, whom he had known since high school days; three children, Dr. Nancy Barrett of Detroit, Mich., Brady Smith Jr. of Brookeville, MD and Kathleen Briggs of Centreville, MD; and nine grandchildren.

A reception in his memory will be held at 4 p.m. May 11 at Chartwell Country Club, 1 Chartwell Drive, Severna Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Rescue Squad, 8501 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108, or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made to www.barrancofuneralhome.com
