Irwin Gover Courtney, 83, a 41-year resident of St. Margarets in Annapolis, died of heart failure Aug. 29 at home.

Mr. Courtney was born April 12, 1921, in Baltimore, where he was reared and attended high school.

He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Vammen in the Pacific.

He was the second generation owner of a retail meat business in the Lexington Market in Baltimore and retired in 1988.

An avid wood-worker and clock maker, he also enjoyed boating and fishing.

He was the widower of Lucy Courtney.

Surviving are four sons, Irwin Greene Courtney II of Shady Side, Michael B. Courtney of Arnold, Donald C. Courtney of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mark F. Courtney of Forest, Va.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial is private.
