Hyman Lavender

Hyman Edward Lavender, 90, a resident of Severna Park for five years, died after a lengthy illness at Sunrise Assisted Living on Nov. 21.

A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Mr. Lavender was born July 29, 1917, to the late Rose and Leo Lavender. He also lived in Staten Island, N.Y., Oceanside N.Y. and, for 23 years, in Baltimore. He worked at the Brooklyn Post Office and was a teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal and truant officer in schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island. He earned a master's degree from Brooklyn College.

During World War II, he served in Europe as an advanced engineering specialist in the Army Signal Corp. He was sent to Harvard University to advance his training.

His interests included coin collecting, reading about cryptography and stories of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lillian Yellin Lavender of Severna Park; two daughters, Margo Woodard of Severna Park and Wendy Estes of Baltimore; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was the brother of the late Lee Beck, Mary Lavender, Peggy Bergen and Jules Lavender.

A funeral service will be held in the chapel at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Road, Crownsville, at 10:45 a.m. Monday.
