Howard Wentworth Wheeler, Jr., 68, a long-time resident of Severna Park and Annapolis, passed away at his home in Annapolis, May 28, following an illness of several months.

Mr. Wheeler was born Nov. 4, 1941 in Baltimore to the late Helen Chesshire Wheeler and the late Howard W. Wheeler, Sr.
He was raised in Severna Park, attending Anne Arundel County Public Schools until he entered Severn School, Severna Park, in 1956.

Mr. Wheeler was a 1959 graduate of Severn School, where he played varsity football and lacrosse. He later attended the University of MD, College Park where he was on the lacrosse team.

He also played for the Olde Severna Park "Bengals" of the U.S. Club Lacrosse Association. He served for many years as a board member of the club, including as president in 1974-75.
For many years, Mr. Wheeler traveled the East Coast and Midwest, selling a wide variety of items on college campuses and at ethnic festivals and community fairs. He used this experience to become Owner/Operator of several eclectic retail stores called "Salsa" in Muncie, IN.
In his later years, Mr. Wheeler was involved in home-improvement and retail sales.

Mr. Wheeler enjoyed attending meetings of the Severna Park Old Timers Association and his annual Severn School reunions. His other interests included reading, music, solving crossword and Sudoko puzzles, researching family genealogy and following the fortunes of the Terrapins, Orioles and Ravens, New York Yankees, and local and collegiate lacrosse.

Mr. Wheeler often spoke of his days as an original member of the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association "Green Hornets". Mr. Wheeler played football, baseball, and basketball alongside such future county sports luminaries as Clayton"Bud" Beardmore, the late John Codd, Tony Domenech, Dick and Lee Curry and Joe Stewart. Mr. Wheeler was one of the boys who selected "Green Hornets" as a nickname after that of a popular radio series character of the day.
Mr. Wheeler was an Army Reserve Veteran primarily serving at Ft. Hood, TX, where he earned the Good Conduct Medal, The National Defense Service Ribbon and Markmanship Badges.

Mr. Wheeler is survived by sisters Judith W. O'Malley, of Severna Park; Janice K. Wheeler, of Baltimore; his brother, Richard S. Wheeler, of the United Arab Emirates, and by nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Howard's Life, Thursday, June 3rd at 125 Hatton Drive, Severna Park, MD from 5-7 pm.
