IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard E.
Shute
June 4, 1930 – November 3, 2016
Captain Howard E. Shute, MC, USN (retired)
Howard Shute died surrounded by his children in the early afternoon of November 3, 2016 at his home in Severna Park Maryland after a brief illness. He was 86 years old.
Howard was born in Auburn New York on 4 June 1930 to parents David P. Shute and Anne Elizabeth Harvey Shute, the oldest of four children.
He attended various schools in NY, PA and WV, and graduated from high school in Parkersburg, WV in 1947. In 1948 he entered naval service as Midshipman, USNR, in the NROTC of Cornell University. After graduating with a degree in zoology, he was commissioned as Ensign USN in September 1951, and assigned to duty in USS Walton DE 361.
During his 38 months on the Walton he saw combat service in the Korean War and served as Assistant Gunnery Officer, First Lieutenant, Gunnery Officer and Navigator. He was then released to inactive duty and remained in the active reserve as a lieutenant.
He entered medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1955, and in October of that year met the love of his life, Evelyn Kohr Light, whom he married in 1956. Daughters Martha Ann (1956) and Nancy Jane (1958) and son David Hobart (1959) followed.
In the summer of 1958, in the third year of medical school, the young family ran out of money, and the U. S. Navy came to the rescue. He was commissioned as Ensign in the Medical Corps and returned to active duty in his fourth year of Medical School. He completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine in various naval hospitals, and his fellowship in Hematology at Thomas Jefferson University.
Among his professional duties, he was Chief of Hematology, Chief of Outpatient Services, and Assistant Chief of Medicine at Naval Regional Medical Center, Oakland California. His five years in Oakland were the most professionally satisfying period of his life. He served as Fleet Medical Officer for the Commander in Chief, US Naval Forces Europe, in London, England for three years. He served 18 months as Director of Clinical Services supervising 100 physicians and surgeons at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. He commanded Naval Hospital Beaufort South Carolina for two years.
He retired from active duty in 1982 to Severna Park Maryland, but stayed quite active until recently in his community association, church, hospice (which he early on helped become viable, and which served him in his final illness), the Boy Scouts of America, and in an association he helped create to help older folks stay in their homes, At Home Chesapeake.
In retirement he also pursued his lifelong interests in model airplanes and model trains, reading, arts and crafts, religious studies, history, cooking and dining, camping, travel--especially to national parks and Disney World—and, as a former gunnery officer, anything that could or might go boom, from model rockets to fireworks.
He delighted in his family, especially his grandchildren Alex, Karen, Laura, and Ted, and was at the baptism of his great-grandchildren Nora and Thomas in October 2016.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eleanor Shute Henn, his brother William Shute, his first-born daughter Martha Ann Shute, and his wife Evelyn Light Shute.
Howard is survived by his sister, Katie Shute Breen of Harrisburg, PA; his children Nancy Shute Landry and her husband Bryan Thomas Landry, Jr. of Woodbine, Maryland, and David Hobart Shute and his wife Amy Dwyer-Shute of Rocky River, Ohio; his grandchildren Henry Alexander "Alex" Corvey of Rocky River, Ohio, Karen Elizabeth Landry (and husband Brett Lawrence Kutscher) of Columbia, Maryland, Laura Landry Hawkins (and husband Mitchell Damon "Mitch" Hawkins) of Westminster, Maryland, and Edward Regin "Ted" Corvey (and wife Danielle Nye Corvey) of Charleston, South Carolina; and by his two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday November 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409. Interment will take place at the church cemetery immediately following the funeral service. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
