IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hon. James
P. Salmon
February 9, 1940 – January 17, 2024
The Honorable James Patrick Salmon
Judge James Patrick Salmon passed away on January 17, 2024 at the age of 83. Jim was born on February 9, 1940 in Easton, Maryland. A first-generation Irishman, he was the son of the late John Salmon, who was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and the late Mary Fitzpatrick Salmon, who was born in County Longford, Ireland.
Jim was a long-time resident of University Park, Maryland, and recently enjoyed their winter residence in Bonita Springs, Florida. Jim grew up in the town of Trappe, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He graduated from Easton High School in 1958, then attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1962. He then entered the University of Maryland School of Law and graduated with a J.D., magna cum laude, in 1965.
Jim began his legal career as a law clerk to Court of Appeals Judge Charles C. Marbury. He went on to become a partner with the Upper Marlboro law firm Sasscer, Clagett, Channing and Bucher where, as a trial attorney, he was inducted into the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. In 1988, he was appointed as a Judge on the Circuit Court of Prince Georges County, Maryland. In 1994, Jim was appointed to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Even after the mandatory retirement age of 70, Jim continued to serve on that Court as a Senior Judge until his death. Jim was recently recognized for having served the courts of Maryland as a Judge for thirty-five years.
In addition to his love of the law, Jim was an avid reader. He loved history, kept up with current events, and remembered everything he ever read. That made Jim an excellent conversationalist, for he was knowledgeable regarding so many topics. He very much enjoyed talking with people. An exercise enthusiast, Jim enjoyed bicycle riding, walking, and using exercise equipment. He even had his own chin-up bar built in his backyard.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ann Salmon Wood, and his sister-in-law, Carol Seitz Salmon.
Jim is survived by his wife of thirty eight years, Sharon Witte Salmon, her son Neil Coleman and niece Carlette Witte, brother John Salmon of Millersville, Maryland, and brother Martin Salmon (Denise) of Chesapeake City, Maryland, nieces Teresa Dawson (Dale), Michelle Salmon (Sarah), Caitlin Salmon (Tony), and Bridgid Salmon (J.T.) and nephews Kevin Wood, Danny Wood (Katharina), John Fitzpatrick Salmon (Kathleen), Matthew Salmon (Christina), and many much-loved grand nieces and nephews, as well as the family cat, Clark.
Family and friends may visit on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Barranco Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 29, 2024 at 11 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, North Aurora Street in Easton, MD.
