Herman Joseph Schmitz, Jr., 88, a 45 year resident of Severna Park, died on January 8, 2013 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

He was born on September 13, 1924 in Chicago, IL, was raised in Westfield, NJ, and graduated from Westfield High School. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA, the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, where he played football and New Jersey Technical Institute in Newark, NJ. Other residences include Mountainside, NJ (11 years), and Sarasota, FL in the wintertime (28 years).

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943-1946. Herman was employed as an Engineer with Westinghouse Oceanic Division in Annapolis until his retirement.

Herman was a member of Plainfield Ski Club in Plainfield, NJ; Metedeconk River Yacht Club in Brick, NJ; and Fair Oaks Community Association in Severna Park, MD. He enjoyed boating, gardening, and sports.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret "Peggy" Schmitz.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joan Schmitz of Severna Park and her children, Lynne Powell (Mark) of Severna Park, Christie Kajs (Louis) of Severna Park, David Kerr (Nilda) of Montpeiler, VT; four daughters, Anne Kloth (Larry) of East Grand Rapids, MI, Kathy Bressler (Iric) of Stafford, VA, Aileen Schmitz of Milton, DE, and Betsy Schmitz of Frederica, DE; eleven grandchildren, Lawrence, Meagan, Colleen, Iric Jr., Kevin, Stephanie, Lindsay, Emily, Amy, Coale, and Noel; one great granddaughter, Brooke; and one brother, Robert Schmitz of Allentown, NJ.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 10 AM at St. Andrew by the Bay Church, 701 College Pkwy, Annapolis, MD 21409. Interment will be at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the AAMC Foundation Institute, 2001 Medical Parkway, Sajak Pavilion, Suite 550, Annapolis, MD, 21401 for the support of a new Heart Station in the Heart and Vascular Institute.
