Herb was born at home in Baltimore, 1006 S. Paca Street, at 2:35 pm on November 20, 1924. Parents, (William) Herbert and Lynn moved in 1926 to Pasadena. Herb attended the original six-room,  Pasadena Elementary and Glen Burnie High School. He met the love of his life, Betty, in his senior year, 1941 (Pearl Harbor) and graduated in 1942.

Herb was employed by Baltimore Gas & Electric. He was drafted into WWII in March 1943 into the 127 th Signal Radio Intelligence Co. at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio. In August 1943 he transferred to the Army Specialized Training Program at University of Arkansas, Engineering. Herb was shifted to U of Cincinnati and completed pre-med. He served at Nichols General (Army) Hospital, Louisville Kentucky, December 1944 as an orthopedic tech/ward man. WWII ended in August 1945 and he was then admitted to University of Cincinnati Medical School in October of 1945. His Army program ended and he was honorably discharged in February 1946.

His father became terminally ill and Herb withdrew from University of Cincinnati. He then returned to BGE. Encouraged by mentors to teach, he was hired as an emergency 5 th grade teacher at Jacobsville (original) School in September 1946. He was admitted to the University of Maryland in the Summer and Fall/Spring night classes. He shifted to grade 6, then grade 7 later on at the newly created Glen Burnie Junior High School.

Betty and Herb were married August 12, 1950. Betty continued to work; Herb took a leave of absence and commuted to University of Maryland and completed his BS degree in 1951. Expecting their child, Herb left teaching for Davison Chemical's statistical quality control department.

While living in Riverdale-on-the-Magothy, Marjorie was born on November 21 st . Herb was appointed principal at Jacobsville Elementary in 1953. The next year Betty became a telephone operator. Herb became the principal at Richard Henry Lee in 1957. The family then moved in with Betty's parents. They purchased their own home on Pasadena Road in 1958.

Herb received his masters of education in 1960. Betty worked at Presbyterian Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in 1964 and the next year Herb was assigned supervisor of special (federal) projects at the Board of Education's Green Street office. Betty was a secretary and co-administrator of Steamship Trade Association's pension and insurance division in Baltimore in 1966. Starting in 1968, Herb coordinated the school building program. He retired in 1983 with 34 years with Anne Arundel County Schools; Betty joined him in 1986.

Fascinated by a flight in Whipp's Piper Cub, in 1941, Herb joined the Commemorative Air Force. Herb and Betty were active in restoration, air shows, and flights in restored WWII aircraft. Both were also active with Anne Arundel Heritage in the restoration of Linthicum Walks. With the Anne Arundel Retired Teachers, they served more than 30 years in restoration and maintenance of the Anne Arundel County Free School (built in 1724). They volunteered at North Arundel and Baltimore Washington Medical Center Auxiliary. Both had thousands of hours of volunteer service.

Herb, Betty, family and friends had squeezed in many activities, events, and travel. A very wonderful life! They lost Betty, and much more, November 17, 2007. Herb found a new focus with the hospital auxiliary volunteering at the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology for 11 years.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Sappington and his son-in-law, Robert Bryce Smith. Herb is survived by; his brother, William James; his daughter, Marjorie Lynne; two grandsons, Scott Robert (Krystle) and Brian Douglas (Angelica); two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Parker; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, July 16, 2018, from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at Barranco and Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD 21146. A funeral service will be held the following day, Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at 10:00 am at the funeral home. The interment will follow the funeral service and be held at Glen Haven Memorial Park, 7231 Ritchie Hwy, Glen Burnie, MD 21061. Reception to follow at New Hope Chapel, 804 Windsor Rd, Arnold, MD 21012.
