Helen Annette (Phelps) Erdman, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in the early morning hours of January 19th, 2014.
Helen was born August 6th 1920 to Vernon L. and Edna (Kelly) Phelps on farmland which is now occupied by BWI airport. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1936.
In 1942 she was married to Francis Jackson "Jack" Erdman, and had two children, Laurens Baker, in 1953 and Nancy Stewart in 1955.
Helen was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, deeply involved through the years in the church, Bible Studies, and retreats. Professionally she was an office manager for Brown and Trimble for over 30 years until her retirement in 1975.
In her personal life she was a homemaker for her family, taking her children to swimming and music lessons, as well as being an excellent cook and hostess. She was also a fine seamstress, and deeply involved in politics, both on the local and national levels. She was a moving force in the removal of slot machines from Anne Arundel County.
In her later years, Helen remained active by playing bridge as often as possible and enjoyed researching and writing about her family genealogy.
Helen is survived by her son, Laurens Baker and daughter – in law, Becky Erdman of Newport, VT, and by her daughter Nancy Stewart, and son-in-law, Gary Arthur Chick of Crofton, MD. Helen has two grandchildren of whom she was extraordinarily proud, Jennifer Sharon Erdman, a nurse in Lynchburg VA, and Kelly Marie Chick, a student at Corcoran College in Washington, DC.
Helen was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Ann Snyder and Barbara Rowen. She is survived by her brother James Phelps, of Charlestown, MD, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
