Helen MacFarland Bartels, 77, of Wilmington, Del., died of cancer Sept. 23 at the home of her daughter, Jennifer Bartels Haughton, in Severna Park, after a nine-month illlness.
Mrs. Bartels was born June 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., and lived in Wilmington for more than 30 years. She graduated from Abington High School in Glenside, Pa., and in 1951 from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa.
On June 12, 1951, she married George W. Bartels Jr. who is now deceased.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Concern Quilters, the DuPont Country Club and the Association of Women's Golfers in Delaware. She enjoyed playing golf and being a grandmother.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two sons, George Thomas Bartels of Cary, N.C., and Jeffrey William Bartels of Kalispell, Mont.; four sisters, Jane Moore of Oregon, Miriam Galloway of Florida, Ruth Cirzan of Arkansas and Ginny Waters of California; three brothers, Donald McFarland of Florida, Richard McFarland of New Jersey and John MacFarland of California; and 13 grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Barbara Donnely.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W. 13th St., in Wilmington. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made to www.barrancofuneralhome.com.
