Captain Harry Gregory Kosky, US Coast Guard Retired, 87, died April 5, 2008, at his home of heart failure after a brief illness.

He was born on August 17, 1920 in Baltimore and was raised in Curtis Bay. A graduate of Polytechnic Institute and Loyola College. He joined the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war he earned a Degree in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He then accepted a commission in the Coast Guard. Some of his duty stations included Hawaii, Michigan, New Orleans before moving to Severna Park in 1970. Captain Kosky served as an Executive Officer on the USCG Mackinaw and as Captain of the USCG Westwind. He voyaged to the Arctic Circle three times and to the Antarctic. He retired from the Coast Guard after 31 years of service.

Captain Kosky taught religious education for over 50 years and was a very active member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish in Severna Park. At St. John the Evangelist he was involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Youth Ministry, Renew Group, Ushers and Greeters, Weekly Bible Study, and the Pastoral Home Visit and Health Ministry. He helped establish the Library for Adult Education and he volunteered to hold prayer services in local nursing homes and hospitals. He received the Archdiocesan Medal for Outstanding Service to the Church. Captain Kosky was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Severna Park.

His wife Aldean Barnette Kosky died February 18, 2008. He was also preceeded in death by a daughter, Susie Albert.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Kosky of Honolulu, HI and Michael Kosky of Panama City, FL, a daughter, Marcie Stephenson of Severna Park, five grandchildren and a sister, Helen Griber of Catonsville, MD.

Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Barranco & Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. The Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Johns the Evangelist Church, Interment Services with Military Honors will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
