Harriette Bain Stegman of Arnold, Md. died peacefully at home May 25, 2016. She was 95 years old.
She was the daughter of Robert James and Mary Isbel Bain of Hopewell, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Donald Stegman, Sr. and a grandson Andrew Biggs.
She grew up in Hopewell and upon graduation from high school worked as a telephone operator at Camp Lee, Va. There she met her husband in 1943 while he was serving in the Army during the war. They were married in Colton, Ca. at an army base prior to Don's overseas tour of duty in France for 18 months. Their first child was born while he was still overseas and she moved to Baltimore to be closer to Don's parents. They raised 4 children and she worked part-time as a real estate agent in Severna Park for Hammond S. Carr.
Upon retirement Harriette and Don traveled extensively in Asia and Europe for 5 years while he taught accounting on Army bases and she did volunteer work on base, took lifelong learning courses, and immersed herself in the cultures of Korea, Germany and Japan.
She was an avid sailor and bridge player and enjoyed children, flowers and music; especially live music played at home by her children who grew up to her soundtrack of Broadway musicals, songs of the Caribbean and big band swing. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.
She is survived by her four children: Nancy Biggs of Chestertown (Dick), Charles Stegman Jr. of Salisbury (Carolyn), Alice Corey of Arnold (Jim), Steve Stegman of Silver Spring (Susie), six grandchildren (Julie, Neil, Lindsay, Kelly, Erin, Todd), three great grandchildren (Oliver, Jack, Annalise), and two devoted caretakers/friends Maisie Lewis and Mevelle Earlington.
A Memorial service will be at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park, MD 21146 on Thursday June 30 at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow the service at that location.
