Gwendolyn P. Wray, 95, former homemaker and volunteer, and a resident of Atria in Salisbury, MD passed away on February 21, 2012.
Born Mildred Gwendolyn Pfeiffer, she was the daughter of Archibald A. Pfeiffer, owner of Pfeiffer Brothers on Greenmount Ave., and Mildred Hall Pfeiffer. In 1936, she became Honored Queen of Bethel #11. A graduate of Eastern High School, she attended the Maryland Institute of Art, where she received top honors.
In 1939, she married Robert G. Wray and moved to Kelway Road in Northwood, where the couple raised two daughters. She was a volunteer in her daughters' schools, her neighborhood church Northwood Appold, in Girl Scouts, and in the Northwood Garden Club. She loved playing cards and belonged to several bridge clubs.
Although she never pursued a career in art, it had a tremendous impact on her life. She was most proud of the large portraits she painted of her five grandchildren, all dressed in her father's velvet suits.
When her husband was shot and paralyzed in 1971, she nursed him back to health, operated his business, and sold the properties. The couple traveled to Europe on three wonderful trips before moving to Oakcrest Retirement Village. It was there that her husband died in 1996.
She is survived by two daughters: Joyce D. Wray and Cheryl W. Kirk, four grandchildren: Carol Swales, Bradley Duker, Philip Duker, and Douglas Bodaczewski, and six great grandchildren: Lucas Duker, Niall Swales, Zachary Duker, Sebastian Duker, India Swales, and Genevieve Duker. Her third grandchild, Robert Bodaczewski, died in 2002.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 11am -12pm, with the funeral service to follow at noon. The interment will be held in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733 Salisbury, MD 21802.
