Grace Mae
Martin
March 18, 1929 – June 17, 2022
Grace Mae Martin, 93 of Selbyville, DE, died at home June 17, 2022 after a short illness and Alzheimer disease. Grace was born in Hurricane, W.VA. She was raised on a farm in Hurricane, W.VA. Grace was married September 1,1950 to Albert Martin for 59 years before Albert passed away May 23, 2009.
Grace was one of seven children with only her one sister Mildred Hinkley and brother Virgil Adkins still alive. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter C. Adkins and Ida Gertrude Adkins, her brothers Harvey, Ivan, Delbert and one sister Frances Courtright.
Surviving is her one child, Carol Ann Lacher and (husband Jerry Lacher) of Selbyville, DE. She has two grandchildren Matthew Lacher, (wife Melanie) of Frederick, MD, Jessica Pilkerton, (husband Alan Pilkerton of Severna Park, MD. Three great-grandchildren Cole, Ella, and Hudson Pilkerton. Soon to be a new great-grandchild baby boy Lacher.
Grace's first job out of high school was working in a dime store at the candy counter in St. Albans, W VA. Grace joined the Chesapeake Telephone Co. in 1949 for 35 years. She is the only person we know that retired longer than she worked with excellent benefits for her healthcare. Grace loved her job and was a great leader in her supervisor position. She and Albert moved when he was in the Army to Glen Burnie, MD. She transferred to C& P Telephone Company in Baltimore, MD working until March of 1985 to begin her favorite and honorable role as caretaker for her grandchildren Matthew and Jessica. Grace and Albert resided in Selbyville, DE full time 2006 at the beach.
Grace's favorite pass time was daily shopping at Macy's in Glen Burnie, MD. We would joke about her being at Macy's everyday that she became part of the President Club. She was a member of the Moose Lodge with Albert having fun dancing the night away. She attended church when going to her hometown at Mount Salem Methodist Church, Hurricane, W VA, and in Severna Park at the Severna Park Methodist Church.
Grace loved her new role of grandmother and never lost a beat attending all their school activities and sport activities. She loved the horse races, slot machines, buying lottery tickets, playing cards, and board games with her family.
When Albert passed, Grace lived at the beach alone and enjoying her friendships in the area and shopping until April 2019. Her daughter retired from nursing and she and her husband resided with Grace to care for her. She had Alzheimer's disease diagnosed in 2019.
Grace received unconditional loving care by her daughter and son-in-law, along with family and Hospice of Delaware her in home until passing on June 17,2022.
