Gertrude M. (Skane) Dinan of Annapolis MD, 93, wife of the late John T. Dinan and the mother of three daughters, died on April 6, 2011 at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center with her family by her side.
Gertrude was born on November 24, 1917 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Gertrude (Hyland) and Bill Skane. She was the only girl among three brothers, John and Richard who preceded her in death and George of Winthrop, Mass. In her younger days, she learned to swim and dive at the beaches near her home and loved being in the water.
After high school, Gertrude graduated from Boston Clerical School which prepared her for her occupation, as a secretary at the State House in Boston. It was there, while working at the Mass. Department of Agriculture, that she met the love of her life, John Thomas Dinan. Gertrude and John were married 58 years until his death in October 2002.
Gertrude lived in Massachusetts most of her life, in Boston, Lawrence and Methuen until moving to Maryland in the early 90s. In the years in Methuen, she returned to work and enjoyed her job at the IRS in Andover, Mass. She was an avid reader and very good with a crossword puzzle. She had a vivid imagination which she shared with her children and grandchildren and a keen interest in vocabulary. She was a life-long learner, always fascinated with the news of the day and curious about what the world would be like in "the future."
Perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments was being a woman of the Greatest Generation, a woman who raised her infant daughter while her husband fought the war in the Pacific. Gertrude introduced 9 month old Trudy to him upon his return. Surviving are her daughters and their husbands, Trudy (Dinan) and Joe Sampugnaro, Eileen (Dinan) and Dan McCrady all of Annapolis, and Mary Catherine (Dinan) and Steve Dolan of South Portland, Maine; grandchildren Joe, Jane, Carrie, Keith and Julie and 14 great-grandchildren; brother George of Winthrop, Mass. and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, April 8th, from 4-7pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:30am at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21409. Interment will be private.
