George Russell Syms, 86, a resident of Severna Park passed away on July 7, 2017, surrounded by his family, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

He was born on January 26, 1931 in Charleston, WV and was raised in South Charleston, WV. He graduated from South Charleston High School in 1949 and graduated from Marshall University in Huntington, WV in 1953. He married Charlene Baum on January 31, 1953 and they previously lived in Richmond, VA; Greensboro, NC; Bluefield, WV; and Baltimore, MD.

George served in the U.S. Navy, was employed as a Terminal Manager with Texaco for 32 years, and was a member of Severna Park United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed hunting and the time spent at his camp in West Virginia and enjoyed watching the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charlene Syms; two daughters, Cynthia Ryder of Annapolis, MD and Cathy Miner (Steve) of Severna Park, MD; one son, Clifton Syms (Jessie) of Pasadena, MD; two sisters, Caroll ( Syms) Birch and Janina Ann (Ja) Syms of South Charleston, WV; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn ( Baum) Baber of Taylors, SC and Claris (Baum) Baer of Poca, WV; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Baum of Warrenton, VA and Jerry Baum of Washington, WV; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 11:00 am at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road, Severna Park, MD 21146.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Severna Park United Methodist Memorial Garden, 731 Benfield Road, Severna Park, MD 21146.
