IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Joseph
Sax
May 8, 1935 – August 1, 2017
George Joseph Sax, 82, of Severna Park, Maryland, entered into eternal life on August 1, 2017 after obstinately cheating death many times during a decades-long illness. Born and raised in The Bronx, New York, as the youngest child of George and Mary (Maxwell) Sax, he was a lifelong Yankees fan and often recounted watching games in the 1940s and 50s through the wooden fence at Yankee Stadium. After losing his mother suddenly when he was just nine years old, George relied heavily on his spiritual relationship with the Blessed Mother for the rest of his life.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and spent three years stationed in Germany, a cherished time when he enjoyed living in the homeland of his beloved grandfather Lorenz Sax. Following his service, George returned to New York and soon after joined IBM, where he had a successful 35-year career as a mainframe computer technician before illness forced him to retire.
In the summer of 1966, he met a gorgeous redhead from Brooklyn who stole his heart. Six weeks later, he proposed to Regina Ryan, whom he married in October of that same year. Together, during their 51-year marriage, they raised three children – Gracemarie (Manning Thomas Jeter IV), George (Beth) and Liz (Jim), eventually moving to Lake Mohawk in Sparta, New Jersey. A devoted father, he coached a variety of sports teams, helped create dozens of school projects, required a list of chores to be complete before Saturday morning cartoons, and made his children feel like they could tackle anything in life as long as they kept their faith, worked hard without complaint, and lived with integrity.
George was definitely a Renaissance man – as much a talented artist and craftsman as he was an athlete and mathematician. As an accomplished second degree black belt in judo, he was a member of the New York Athletic Club during the 1960s. He could also fix, create, build or rebuild any piece of automotive machinery or household appliance, and was the first to embrace every new technology as soon as it became available.
Despite going into his retirement begrudgingly, he quickly fell in love with his second career as a full-time and incredibly proud grandfather. He leaves behind nine grandchildren – Liam, Alexis, Brigid, Emma, Keara, Erin, Aislinn, Rory and Aileen. George was predeceased by both his parents as well as his sisters Ann and Mary, all of whom were most assuredly waiting to greet him with arms wide open at heaven's gates.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate George's life will be held on Saturday, August 5 at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park. Burial will take place at a future date.
