George Edsel Newcomb, 81, a resident of Millersville, MD, died on February 19, 2011 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

He was born on August 22, 1929 in Cambridge, MD and raised in Dorchester County. He formerly lived in Church Creek, MD.

George worked in road construction for many years, Hess Oil Company for 12 years, and was a self-employed excavator under G.E. Newcomb & Son for 30 years.

In 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the 1st Cavalry Division in Japan, and the 24th Infantry Divison Artillary Battallion Service Battery in Korea. He is a Life Member of the DAV-Glen Burnie Chapter 13 and member of the American Legion. His love in life was playing the guitar and singing for the Senior Citizens, camping, spending the winter months in Florida and enjoying the grand and great grandchildren. George was a manager of Elvaton Little League and Boy Scout Leader of Troop # 854 at Christ Lutheran Church in Elvaton.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Donald Newcomb, Thelma Newkirk, Jeanette Foxwell, Russell Newcomb, Medford Newcomb, Mace Newcomb, John Newcomb, and Robert Newcomb.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette E. Newcomb of 57 years; one son, Franklin Newcomb of Glen Burnie; three daughters, JoAnn Pennington of Millersville, Katherine Armitage of Glen Burnie and Emily Donaho of Pasadena, MD; grandchildren, Brandi, Thomas, Adam, Jennifer, Haley, Todd, Emily Ann, Alex, Sean; step grandchildren, Jennifer, Sadie, and Rachel; nine great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and
sister, Mildred Quidas of Preston, MD.

Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. A Chapel Service will be held at 2:00 pm in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.
