Retired Navy Capt. George B. Lindgren, 81, of Arnold, died May 13 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Capt. Lindgren was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, and immigated to the United States at age 2. He was reared in the Midwest and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was selected for the Navy ROTC program and majored in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan.
After graduating and being commissioned as an ensign, he served aboard the USS Houston. During the Korean War he served aboard the battleship USS Missouri and later commanded several patrol vessels. After three years at the Navy Postgraduate School, he was assigned as engineering officer on the USS Mitscher and as machinery and electrical officer on the staff of Cruiser-Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet. As a lieutenant commander he was commanding officer of the USS Dealey.
Capt. Lindgren attended the Air War College and attained a master's degree in foreign affairs from George Washington University. He commanded the guided missile destroyer USS Conyngham, and later commanded Destroyer Division 162.
Capt. Lindgren was commanding officer of Naval Station, Annapolis, and served two tours of duty in research and development on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon.
He was an Eagle Scout and held many volunteer positions with the Boy Scouts including scoutmaster of Troop 983 in Alexandria, Va., and dean of merit badges in the Capitol District in Annapolis. He also held a private pilot's license.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara L. Lindgren; one daughter, Karin Lindgren of Palm Beach, Fla.; and one stepdaughter, Debra Kim Oliver of Annapolis. He was the father of the late George Bjorn Lindgren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Severna Park, and at 3 p.m. August6,2007 at Fort Myer Chapel, with burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
