George Edward Humphries, 85, a 40-year resident of the Berrywood community of Severna Park, Maryland, died February 9 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a short illness.
Born on March 10, 1923, in West Plains, Missouri, Mr. Humphries was the son of John and Veda Humphries. He was a graduate of West Plains High School and the University of Missouri, where he received a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering. He was a veteran of World War II and served his country in the Army Air Corps. After his military service, Mr. Humphries married the late Joan Heidler Humphries. He was employed at the Shell Oil Refinery in Wood River, Illinois, and was active in youth service and Boy Scout leadership. In 1956, he moved to Schenectady, New York, to work for Alco Products, where he was most notably a member of the design and test team for Camp Century, the first nuclear-powered arctic research center under the icy surface of Greenland. From 1962 to 1971, Mr. Humphries was employed at Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Atomic Power Lab near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and their facility in Lansdowne, Maryland. Following that, he worked for over 20 years in the systems management division of the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C., and retired in 1992.
Through the years, he was active as a volunteer with the Anne Arundel County Board of Education and the Severna Park planning and zoning council, as well as past president and long-time member of the Berrywood Community Association Board of Directors. He also was a member of the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.
Mr. Humphries is survived by his brother, William Humphries, of Ava, Missouri, and five daughters: Kristin Leach and Deborah Gruen of Arnold, Maryland; JoEllen Brewton of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Sarah French of Severna Park, Maryland; and Laura Bernstein of Columbia, Maryland, as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 16, at 1:00 p.m. at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, in Severna Park, Maryland. Mr. Humphries will be immured in the columbarium in the church sanctuary. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
