George F. "Chip" Obrecht, III of Severna Park, Maryland passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023 from complications of Parkinson's Disease at the age of 77. (Bryan) Prindiville of Bel Air, MD; and two grandchildren, Keira Prindiville and Paige Obrecht.
Chip was born in Baltimore on December 6, 1945, the son of Charles F. Obrecht and Alice F. Obrecht (nee Minor). He was the youngest of three children, sister Anne O. Shreve (now deceased), and brother Charles F. "Rick" Obrecht, Jr. of Centreville, MD. He graduated from the University Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology in 1967. Chip taught 9 th grade science at George Fox Junior High School in Pasadena, MD for two years and then joined the United States Secret Service as a Special Agent in 1969. While serving in the Secret Service, he worked in the Baltimore field office and was then selected for the Presidential Protective Detail. Chip's protective detail assignments included Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford, and other dignitaries including Secretary of the Treasury, John B. Connelly, Jr., First Lady Betty Ford, and President Ronald W. Reagan, when he was seeking the Republican nomination for President against Gerald R. Ford in 1976. He literally traveled the world to numerous places including Vietnam, Thailand, Bangkok, Iceland, Russia and various countries in Europe.
After leaving the Secret Service he attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, graduated in 1979 with a Juris Doctor degree, and was sworn in as an Attorney by the Court of Appeals of Maryland (now the Supreme Court of Maryland) on November 9, 1979. Following that, he joined his brother in the practice of law in Baltimore (OBRECHT AND OBRECHT) and served for a time as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law. Chip was licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and the United States Court of Appeals for the 4 th Circuit in Richmond, VA.
He was a long-time member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, The Barristers Club in Baltimore and the James C. Cawood, Jr. American Inn of Court (formerly the Paca Brent American Inn of Court). In 1992 Chip and Rick moved their practice to Severna Park, MD. Chip was voted one of the Leading Lawyers in Annapolis in 2009. They practiced law together until Chip retired at the end of 2013.
Chip was an avid water skier, a great piano player, a competent attorney and had a very entertaining sense of humor. He enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay and cruising to various ports including a trip up the Delaware River to Philadelphia with other boating friends. He enjoyed reading history and was a pretty good raconteur about the Civil War. In later years his favorite hobby was restoring antique furniture, a talent in which he excelled to the point that friends and relatives brought their antiques to him for restoration.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023 at 1pm at the Severna Park United Methodist Church 731 Benfield Road Severna Park, MD 21146.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
