George Dewey Bone, Jr., 84, of Catonsville, died on March 5 2011 at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Towson. Mr. Bone had been a resident of Severna Park for over 50 years.
He was born on October 5, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to George, Sr. and Eleanor Bone. George's father was a dentist in Chicago, and his mother was a graduate of Northwestern University. George spent his childhood attending school in Chicago. He had an early interest in the new field of aviation. As a child he made flying airplanes from balsa wood. As a teenager he rode his bike to the local airport to earn his pilot's license. He graduated from Hirsch High School in 1944. He later attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in Engineering, Class of 1950.
He served active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 and again from 1952-1953. He was discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1960.
George married Jean Brandon of Chicago in 1949. They move to Maryland in 1957. They resided together in the community of Ben Oaks, Severna Park from 1959 until Jean's death in 1995. In 2004, George was married to Mary Lou Scott of Severna Park. They lived in Ben Oaks until 2008, when they moved to Catonsville.
Mr. Bone was an engineer at Westinghouse Corporation for 37 years, where he worked with military surface radar. He retired in 1994.
He was an early president of the Ben Oaks Civic Association, and he enjoyed being a member of the community. He enjoyed golf, tennis and sailing. He liked to read about history, astronomy and physics. During retirement, he traveled to many parts of the world, including Europe, South America and the Far East.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Scott, of Catonsville: three children, Roger Bone of Hanover, PA, Nancy Alexander of Estes Park, CO, and Diane Hornby of Firestone, CO; four step children, Mark Scott of Brandenburg, KY, Greg Scott of Santa Clara, CA, and Carolyn Roberts of Nottingham, MD and Jeff Scott of Old Mill, MD; as well as eighteen grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 1pm at Severna Park United Methodist Church.
