Genevieve M. Hagan died peacefully at her long-time home in Crofton, Maryland on June 1 after a year-long illness. A native Washingtonian, Jenny was born on January 3, 1923 to Irene and Victor McCeney and attended public schools in the District, graduating first in her class from McKinley Tech at age 16. She began studies at the former Wilson Teachers College, but went to work for the FBI at the outset of World War II, first as a fingerprint examiner and soon thereafter as one of its first female radio operators with service in both San Diego and the DC area. Soon after the war she married Robert H. Hagan, an FBI agent, and they enjoyed 52 years together until his death in 1999.
Jenny was a lifelong educator and never stopped learning. She earned both a bachelors and masters degree in German literature from the University of Maryland, where she was elected to both Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. While raising her three children she taught both elementary and high school students and was the director of religious education while living in Wiesbaden, Germany and for more than two decades at Our Lady of the Fields Church in Millersville, MD.
In addition to her husband, Jenny is predeceased by her three brothers, Norman, Donald (killed in World War II), and Paul. She is survived by her three children, Maureen Cavaiola (Lawrence), Michael Hagan (Nancy Kelly), and Barbara Huston (Steven); as well as five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
