Garry Lynn Holtzman, Captain, Medical Corps, United States Navy (Ret), beloved husband of Maureen Doherty Holtzman, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2015 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. The cause of death was heart failure, following a long illness. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on November 26, 1940 to Lester and Elizabeth Page Holtzman. He attended Susquehanna Township High School, Haverford College, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

Garry's service in the Navy Medical Corps spanned 33 years. In January of 1968 he attended the Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida, becoming a Naval Flight Surgeon. In 1971 he began a residency in Psychiatry at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Following completion of the residency he became head of the Psychiatric Department at the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute in Pensacola, FL. In 1979 he reported to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Senior Medical Officer. Although he enjoyed all of his assignments he always said that "Ike" was the highlight of his operational tours.

Next assignments included Head of the Psychiatric Department at NH Portsmouth VA followed by assignment as Medical Corps Career Development Officer at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C. This was another highlight of his career - he wrote "the book" on how- to succeed as a Navy Doctor. In 1985 he became the Senior Medical Officer of the Naval Clinic at the Naval Academy. Following this he was assigned as the Senior Medical Officer of the U.S. Naval Academy. In this position he made the final decision about medical issues that might disqualify a candidate from admission. Garry was admired for his ability to decipher the gray areas. All of his waived admissions did graduate. His 13 years in Annapolis were definitely a career highlight, endearing him to the Midshipmen and Navy Sports.

He and his spouse, CAPT Maureen Doherty Holtzman, NC, USNR (Ret) retired together in 1999. Following his retirement and a brief period of "doing nothing" he returned to Medicine as a psychiatrist in the Maryland State System, first at Crownsville and then at Springfield. He retired twice while at Springfield, and was asked both times to return to help with special projects. His third retirement was the one that took. After that he enjoyed travelling, gardening, and researching the Geothermal Heat System that was installed at the Severna Park home. Garry achieved greatness through his service to God, his family, his friends, and his country. His military awards included two awards of the Meritorious service Medal and two Navy Commendations.

Captain Holtzman is survived by his wife of almost twenty years, CAPT Maureen Holtzman, NC, USNR (Ret). He and his first wife, Judy Lewis Hobson, were separated and divorced after their move to Severna Park.

He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Kay Holtzman of Harrisburg, PA and their three children, Cindy, Shelley, Bob and their families. Also surviving is his cousin, Susan Helm, a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislation. She also resides in Harrisburg.

He is also survived by his sons and their families: Lester (Chip), his close friend, Felicia Frances and her daughter Samantha; they reside in Crofton, MD; David, his wife Kathallene and their twin sons, Alex and Justin from Centreville, MD; Richard, his wife Kimberly and their son Bailey from Fayetteville, NC; and Dr. Jon, his wife Courtney and their sons, Jackson, Will and Carter of Annapolis, MD. Also surviving is his step-son George Sandall, his wife Doris and their three sons, Connor, Gavin, and Logan living in Vienna, VA. Also surviving is his step-daughter, Elizabeth Sandall, living in Washington, D.C.
