G. Thomas Mercer, 77, long time resident of Severna Park and current resident of Annapolis, died on April 6, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis after a brief illness. He was born May 25, 1932 in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late George and Cecil Mercer.
Mr. Mercer retired in 1993 from Westinghouse Corporation, where he was Vice President and General Manager in ILSD Operations, Technical Services and Westinghouse Electronic & Services Ltd. (WESL). He continued to serve as General Manager of the Command & Control Logistics Support Division. His division was responsible for $130 million worth of business in support of defense products by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
He was a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio with a degree in physics and electrical engineering and he received his MS from New Mexico State University in Mathematics and Engineering. He also served in the United States Signal Corps for two years.
"Tom"was President of the West Severna Park Community Association, member of Engineers Club of Baltimore, and Eucharistic Minister for St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, where he visited local nursing and assisted living facilities.
An avid sailor, he also enjoyed traveling, golfing, building furniture, and building model boats. He enjoyed catering to his grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Gov. Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, April 9 at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, 21146.
Interment will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. Following the Interment, a reception for friends and neighbors will follow at Chartwell Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his late son, Mark Mercer, who died in 1999.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anne Mercer (nee Liberati); his daughter, Mary Lynn Coleman of Arnold, MD; his two sons, Thomas Mercer of Raleigh, NC and Paul Mercer of Millersville, MD; one sister, Miriam Williams of Apollo Beach, FL; and fourteen grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
